Are local modifications safe?

Some of the elevator companies are installing sub-standard and cheap after-market solutions as per the request of the customers. Such modifications have serious implications and may lead to safety risks.

In your opinion, what are the possible reasons that such modifications are executed? Is this because the OEM elevators are not features rich, or the OEM has no alternative but affordable solutions, or is this because of lack of proper knowledge and skills by the maintenance companies.

In South Africa, it is a very common practice to install CCTV cameras, intercoms, special lights, card readers, LED displays inside lift cabin, which are never recommended by the OEM. Are you facing the same issues in your countries? What should be the best practice and how to avoid it?
